I watch a tv show entitled Bridezilla and I was definitely suprised. Bridezilla is a show that I never watch so the experience of watching it with the sound off was kind of funny to me. With the sound off just reading their body language you can tell they were upset, cursing, and making everyone around them miserable. Once I added sound it was no difference. I would have rather watched it without sound because of how everyother word was a curse word. I think if I have watched a show I was familiar with it would have been a little different.
If I could have did this particular assignment on a show I was familiar with it would have been either Sanford and Son or Golden Girls. With the sound off on these shows you can read their body language and laugh all day but at some moments they have a blank expression but what they are saying could be funny. Once you add the sound its just as you figured you are able to put the nonverbal with the verbal. In my opinion Bridezilla just wasn't for me and my interest was quickly gone and I was waiting desperately for something esle to come on.
I have learned that you can get a mix messege with nonverbal communication because sometimes your body language will speak differently from what your are explaining thats why I feel it is always good that your nonverbal matches your verbal when it comes to communication.
Hi Rena,
ReplyDeleteI agree that shows like Sanford and Sons and Golden Girls have very entertaining non-verbal communication --especially if you know the context of the show and the various characters’ personality traits. Facial expressions, gestures, body movements, and context tell us so much. It’s fascinating!
I agree, our nonverbal communication should match our verbal, but I find this a very difficult task to master because often times we are too busy to notice what nonverbal cues we are displaying to our audience. I never really gave my nonverbal cues much thought before taking this course, but people used to say to me all the time that I look like I am upset and I would respond by telling them to never try to read my facial expressions because they do not express my thoughts. Over the past two weeks I've found myself thinking it about it more and more...I guess it is true, awareness is the key to a positive change.
ReplyDeleteI must say I have never watched that show either but I have heard about it. I have been curious to watch the show but after reading your opinion the show sounds like it would give me a headache. I do realize it is easier at times to read people's body language than other times. It does appear when people are making drastic movements it is easy to understand exactly how they feel. When people are making subtle movements it is harder to detect what is going on.
ReplyDeleteI seldom watch television programs, mostly because of the show you have described. With regard to children's TV viewing habits, this activity makes me think that even having the television on without sound, within sight of children can send messages that are inappropriate because of the power of non-verbal communication.
